In the fall of 1962, my father became the Dean of Men at Ashland College and I was a fourth grader at Osborne Elementary.
On many evenings, my father was called to a variety of circumstances regarding activities on campus. On more than one occasion, he would get a call in the wee hours of the morning as someone would contact the local police department about a missing eagle statue in a neighboring community. Yes, some of the people on campus would find out there was an eagle in some location. After driving there to see it, somehow it would end up in their car to make a return trip to Ashland.
These mysterious events usually found my father making a phone call to the owner, explaining what had occurred and usually getting the person on the other end of the line to grant AC the rights of ownership.
Though I never participated in the nighttime travels, I do remember my father telling my younger brother and me about the new eagle in campus.
When I attended AC from 1971 to 1975, I often passed by our eagles and would quietly laugh as I recalled how they actually ended up on campus.
