I did not know anyone at Ashland when I first set foot on the campus as a freshman in 1976. I was from Cincinnati, which was three hours away, andm without a car, it was difficult to go home on weekends. In my second or third week on campus, I stopped into the Campus Activity Board (called something else at that time), and met a guy by the name of Bill Johnson. He was the advisor to the group. I complained that there wasn’t anything to do on campus on the weekends, so he invited me to join the Campus Activity Board (CAB), and help to make things happen. My first assignment was the Recreation Committee. We arranged outdoor activities such as canoe trips, hiking and anything outdoors. Through CAB, I met so many people, including my wife, Joanne, and some of them remain my friends today. I eventually became Chair of CAB, and learned a lot about leadership, delegation and time management. I have used those skills throughout a very successful career. I probably would never have had the chance to take on leadership roles at a larger school, as I had at Ashland. I still appreciate the time I spent at Ashland. My wife and I try to get back to Homecoming as often as possible to get together with some of our long-time friends and relive some of the great memories we had there.
