As an academic advisor for student-athletes at AU, I was the bridge between athletics and academics. I worked with students, the professors and the coaches to achieve success. I fully believe in the “Accent on the Individual.” What I remember most are the students who eventually bought in. I was both their worst nightmare and their best friend—whatever it took to bring out the best in them. One student refused to go to class, and we kicked him off the team. Eventually, he begged to come back. I convinced the coach to not start him for a full season, despite the fact that he was a star. A few years later he graduated… and he went on to play for the Cleveland Browns. I tend to come in as an oppositional figure but then… well, I believe in these kids, and they succeed. Now, they invite me to their baby showers!
