My time at Ashland set the foundation for the rest of my life. When I arrived on campus, there was only one fraternity on campus. So, a few of us got together and asked the administration if we could start another one. They agreed, so we started Phi Beta Gamma—which is now Kappa Sigma. That was an amazing experience, starting something like that. It taught me how to meet people, to befriend people, and many of those friendships are still intact today. I met my wife at Ashland, and our daughter Melissa ended up going here, too. My wife passed away suddenly during our daughter’s senior year, which was difficult for everyone involved, of course. But the college just wrapped their arms around Melissa. Anywhere else, she might’ve been just another number. Being at Ashland, though, meant they gave her all the support they could. They gave her a feather bed to land on, so to speak. That’s just the kind of community Ashland was back then–and, really, still is today.
