In the fall of 2016, we were a growing department and we’d decided that we wanted to do multimedia coverage of the local, regional and national elections on election night. The plan was to go live for five hours, from 7 pm to midnight. Initially we thought that we were only going to broadcast from TV 20, our television station. But, it snowballed into simulcasting on our radio station and also having the Collegian’s website doing live stories as well. Almost every one of our 40 majors across the department were involved in some capacity. It was a highly technical thing to pull off and I was so nervous going into it. But, it went flawlessly. When we got to midnight, the students came to me and asked if we could continue into the night. We added a half hour of live coverage, but, if it had been up to them, they would’ve gone until morning. It was an amazing experience and afterwards, I saw those students just grow in confidence. They pulled off something incredible and it was a joy to be a part of it.
