I started at Ashland College in 1963, commuting daily from Mansfield. Student Union was a wonderful place to eat and study between classes. As a Freshman we had to wear these hats called “dinks,” which were little purple and gold beanies. You had to know the name of all the eagles in front of each building. At that time there were about five buildings. If you could not name them you had to drop to your knees. Then an upper classman would give you a tube of toothpaste and a tooth brush and look on as you had to scrub the sidewalk!
I also remember a very sad moment in college. I was in German class with “Herr Topinka,” when another classmate rushed into the room and informed us that President Kennedy had been shot. It took a while for the news to sink in. But when it did, we all cried and prayed. Class was dismissed.
Ashland University is a wonderful place and I am amazed at all the buildings on campus these days!
