I believe it was the fall of 1981, or perhaps the fall of 1982. Convo was serving fish—again—for the fourth consecutive day, so I decided to write a note and place it into the Convo suggestion box. I didn’t know if anyone would take the time to read it, much less take it seriously. I certainly didn’t expect a reaction. About a week later, I received a call from someone from the Convo staff. They invited me to a steak dinner and informed me that they were going to implement my suggestion: a deli bar for students to make their own sandwiches, with—of course—all of the fixings. I was invited to join their committee, which I had to decline since I was moving into the fraternity house the next semester. (At the time, fraternities had their own cooks.) I am certainly not taking credit for Ashland’s top-rated collegiate food service, but still, I was happy to help in my own modest manner. I must admit that my aversion to fish was my strongest motivator at the time, but I believe the suggestion was somewhat innovative, if only in a small way.
