Accent Stories

Rick Bodge

Alumnus

Class of 1972

At the time, being from the east coast, going to the Midwest was a bit of an adventure. I knew I needed a small school, so I would not get lost in those mass-classes of hundreds of students. I figured I’d give it a try. The try lasted four years, and I really enjoyed my time at Ashland.

Two people made a real impression on me.

First, Dr. Lucille Ford, who taught a number of my economic classes, is a true treasure. She inspired us to work hard and challenged us every day. She had so many impressive connections in the business world and she exposed us to new and current ideas. To this day, I know success in my career was due in part to Dr. Ford’s inspiration.

Second is Larry Hiner, who built the radio/TV department into a robust and successful part of the Ashland experience. He brought big-time experience to the job and gave us all a real shot to make it after graduation. Just take a look at all the radio and TV graduates who have big jobs in the industry.

Ashland may be small, and not an Ivy League school, but it gives all students a real opportunity to succeed.
